This work, currently in progress, is an examination of the small mining town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. In 1962, because of a trash fire, the mines caught fire and due to the large amounts of natural gas underneath the surface, it has continued burning for almost 60 years. The town has been forcefully evacuated, even losing its zip code, but several, unwilling to lose the land that they've had for generations.
Centralia attracts a large crowd of tourists, some passing through, others who come specifically to see what is left of the town. People are often disappointed with what they see, as they often expect to see charred houses, or flames rising from the ground. This is due in part to the success of the video game and film Silent Hill, which is reportedly based on Centralia, and has turned this small abandoned town into a legend, whether it be true or false. This project is an examination of the town of Centralia and its bordering towns, the people who live there, and those who visit just to see what's left.
